Microsoft Teams + OneNote: Just got very useful

So people having been using SharePoint to host OneNote Notebooks for YEARS.  And with SharePoint online, people have had the ability to easily connect to, share and utilize a shared OneNote Notebook.  This made collaboration very easy.

When Microsoft Teams came out, of course we had access to use OneNote Online but there was a huge issue.  It would only create a new OneNote Notebook.  What if you already had existing Notebooks?  What if you had a Notebook with lots of sections?  You simply were out of luck.

However, with the recent update to Microsoft Teams you can now select an existing OneNote Notebook or even paste a OneNote link.

So you can see the new interface for picking OneNote notebooks is super useful.  So if you have been waiting to migrate to Teams, it looks like we finally have a good solution for those who are migrating lots of notebooks to SharePoint and want to access them in Teams.

Yay!!! This is so exciting! Is there a particular version needed to see this change? I’m not seeing it yet.

It’s rolling out slowly. I do not think School and Government accounts are getting it later.

Three quick comments on this otherwise useful feature:

    1. It dropped without notice. Suddenly my functionality was different, which was a little frustrating.
    2. Previously, the OneNote function created a new section for each channel in the team notebook, which made sense. Now, without warning, it was creating completely new notebooks, leading to inconsistency.
    3. My new tactic will be to continue creating sections in the team notebook, and then pasting links to those when I add a OneNote tab. No problem, EXCEPT, inexplicably, the “paste OneNote link” option only appears when I add a OneNote tab to one of my channels. For the other channels, it simply isn’t there for some reason.

Welcome to the future of cloud based services. Random changes without much warned. There was a blog post a day later detailing this but of course the change was already out in the wild.
